The first tip is how you use your hands and hold the reins. As the starting point of a cue or signal, how precise and soft your fingers and hands are will channel through your body, down your seat and into the horse. Therefore, simple softening your grip and wrists when picking up and releasing will make a big difference in your horses response.
The second tip is how you sit in the seat and drive with your hips and legs. This where the motor and locomotion comes from and will determine how easy or hard it will be to steer your horse and lift it's shoulders. It's important to sit deep on your pockets and avoid squeezing with your thighs and pressing to hard in your stirrups.
The third tip is to relax your body. This may sound like no brainer but it's a to easier said than done. Even for professionals. Having the ability to channel relaxed and confident energy through our body to the horse will increase communication dramatically. The goal is got be able to relax enough that your can have your legs on the horse without it reacting before the cue or signal is given.
The fourth tip is cueing. It's important to be very precise and consistent when cueing your horse and teach your horse how to respond to leg and hand pressure.
The Fifth tip is learn to act and not always react. This means that it's important for you to have a plan and a reason for what your asking your horse to do. A destination in mind. This way, you will be pointing the way with your hands and body as you gather your horse instead of just looking down fixing this and fixing that leaving your horse feeling in charge. It should be the other way around.
Last tip is the release. Horse learn from the release and rewards offered when they did something right or something in the right direction. I like to pitch my horse way loose when I reward to make it clear the horse did the right thing.
